The elevator stops and we get out. I follow the girl to another staircase and we go up onto the roof. She walks ahead of me, turning around and around in slow circles all the while looking up into the night sky. I begin to wonder if perhaps she is a bit simple. Great, that is all I need. I am going to get done for taking advantage of a vulnerable adult. Just because she is old enough to have sex doesn’t mean it is right. Not if she is touched in the head. I bet I could end up back in the slammer. They would call it rape; they’d say that I took advantage of someone who was not of sound mind. Non-consent they’d say.
She turns to me and says, “Isn’t it beautiful?”
I look up to where she is looking and I see a thousand stars spread across the sky. I haven’t seen a sky like this since I was little, when I went on holiday with my mom and dad to the coast. That was the only holiday I can ever remember having. My dad left shortly after that and was never seen again and my mom crawled into a bottle of whiskey where she stayed until her liver gave up. That holiday had been the happiest day of my life. Fuck, I try to forget about it, it hurts too much but the memory has flooded my brain and I can’t ignore it. I can see them now, my mom and dad holding hands looking up into the night, my mom calling for me to come and see the Milky Way. She rests her head on my dad’s shoulder and looks down at me with her beautiful smile.
The sexy black girl guy walks to the edge of the roof and points to the horizon where the lights of the city spill out into the night and meet the stars.
“Do you think it would look just as amazing if you stood upon one of those stars and looked back down here at all these city lights?”
I’m not sure if it is really a question that I am supposed to answer but I can’t speak anyway; I am too busy looking at the stars in her deep brown eyes. She looks at me and her smile is my mother’s. I suddenly want to cry. I realize that I haven’t cried for years and years and years. I need to, I really do but I can’t, not now, not here. Fuck, I’ve got to pull myself together. I look down and close my eyes tight and take a deep breath.
“Hey,” she says, “are you ok?”
Then she steps back and pulls her shorts down and lets them fall to the ground where she steps out of them as she lifts her vest top up and over her head, pulling it off with perfect grace. She is stood there with her whole naked body bathing in the starlight. I feel like my whole life has been waiting just for this moment.
